Exploring the Art Trail Near Sand Dollar Anchorage
On February 27 we moved back to Sand Dollar Anchorage with another wind change. But it’s our favorite spot here!
We moved Fika and anchored back by Sand Dollar Beach.
One of the things I love about cruising is the way boaters come together to create and maintain walking trails on uninhabited islands. You’ll often find these trails marked on charts or shared in cruising apps, complete with notes and photos from other sailors. They’re a great way to stretch your legs, explore, and see a different side of these beautiful islands.
The next morning (February 28), near Sand Dollar Anchorage in George Town, we found an extra special trail—an art trail. Along the way, cruisers have turned washed-up trash (and there’s so much of it on these beaches) into creative, colorful displays. Old buoys, driftwood, plastic containers—anything that the sea has tossed ashore—get repurposed into art. Some pieces are painted with fun designs, while others have boat names or messages left behind by passing crews. Walking the trail is like a scavenger hunt of creativity, and it’s always fun to see what other boaters have made. It’s a reminder that even in the middle of nowhere, cruisers leave their mark—not just footprints in the sand, but little bits of art, humor, and community.
After our hike, we headed over to Chat N Chill, the most popular cruiser hangout in George Town. The kids played on the ropes and slacklines while we enjoyed the easygoing vibe of the dinghy beach. Walking around with the stingrays as they glide through the shallow water near the conch shell piles is also fun. It’s the kind of place where you always run into someone you know, and before long, we were swapping stories with other cruisers and soaking in the friendly, laid-back atmosphere.
The kids enjoy some time playing on the ropes at Chat N Chill Beach!
That evening, however, cruising life threw us a curveball. Our fridge suffered a tiny pinprick puncture in the cooling plate, causing the refrigerant to leak out. We tried patching it with JB Weld, but the hissing wouldn’t stop. By morning, it was clear—the fridge was done.
Looks like we’re staying here in George Town until we can fix the fridge!
Enter our amazing cruising community. Our friends on SV Silver Linings from Traverse City, MI, swooped in like heroes, bringing cookies, loaning us a cooler, and even letting us stash a few things in their freezer. They were absolute lifesavers! Moments like these remind us why the cruising world is so special—it’s not just about the places we visit but the incredible people we meet along the way.
