Back to Anchor: Farewell to Marina Life (and So Much Pizza!)
We made a quick stop over to the fuel dock, then dropped anchor within sight of the marina so we could still hang out with friends for a couple more days before we leave.
After a few extra weeks tied to the dock, we’re finally ready to be back on anchor! We’ve topped off our fuel tanks and moved just outside the marina—close enough for short dinghy rides while we wait for the right weather window. One last Grill & Chill night is planned for Friday (our third one this stay!), and then we’re off!
The beach required bikes to get to, otherwise it was a very long walk! We had fun once we got there!
The past two weeks have been packed with fun, starting with a beach day on January 4, where the kids reunited with their friends from SV Oz—friends we initially met here last year. We met them again last year in Georgia along the ICW, and they baked us pizzas in their Ooni Pizza Oven (delicious!). We just picked up the same Pizza Oven on Black Friday before heading south to aim for the Bahamas. We had an epic pizza party on SV Oz that night after the beach, baking 16 pizzas in their pizza oven.
The next night, we wanted burgers but couldn’t find buns at the store, so I made them from scratch for the first time—surprisingly, they turned out great!
On January 6, Ewan finally got to bake the peppermint cake he’d been thinking about since December. With two December birthdays (mine and Gwynnie’s), we’d already had our fill of cake, but it was worth the wait—everyone at the marina potluck loved it.
The peppermint cake was a big hit at the marina!
January 7 was all about learning, as the kids wrapped up Underground to Canada with presentations about the story. That same afternoon, we were treated to a visit from a manatee hanging out by our boat.
The next day, we discovered a quiet, tucked-away beach at low tide and brought our friends from SV Wander along to enjoy it.
More homemade pizza! Fresh basil and mozzarella make it even better.
By January 9, we were back to making pizza—this time, a more modest five pizzas for our family, complete with fresh basil and mozzarella from our last provisioning stop in West Palm Beach.
The food is so good at the Grill & Chill every Friday night at Great Harbour Marina!
On January 10, we enjoyed another Friday night Grill & Chill at the marina, feasting on incredible ribs, wings, and coleslaw. Over the next couple of days, the kids made new friends who live across from the marina during the winter. Their friends even picked them up in their boats to hang out at their house—boat kid life at its finest!
The boys got there first since the rode bikes, so they were already enjoying cold drinks!
Then on January 13, we switched things up and headed to The Native Hut for lunch. Chris and Ewan rode bikes while Gwynnie and I walked, and on the way back, I took a turn on the bike with Ewan while Chris and Gwynnie walked. It was fun to explore a little further from the marina.
And finally, on January 15… more pizza. At this point, I think it’s safe to say we love making pizza.
It’s been a great couple of weeks, but we’re looking forward to life at anchor again. Here’s to new adventures ahead!
