Heading South: A Farewell to the Bay of Five Pirates

Leaving the well-protected Bay of Pirates near the marina, going through the narrow cut, and anchoring just outside so we could leave later in the evening to head for the Exumas that same night.

It’s time to go! As the sun dipped below the horizon, we pulled up anchor and slipped past the cut, leaving the Bay of Five Pirates behind. With just enough light left, we set our course, had dinner, and prepared for an overnight passage. Next stop—the Exumas!

Before we left, Ewan got one last boat-kid adventure when his friends picked him up to go fishing in the bay. It’s always amazing to see how easily kids adapt to this lifestyle, hopping between boats and exploring together. We also made sure to get one last round of wings at the marina—wings seem to be a staple in the Bahamas, right alongside conch salad, conch fritters, and fresh fish.

Ewan went fishing with friends. They picked him up off the back of Fika where we were anchored near the marina.

As a final mark of our time here, we added our boat sticker to the marina ice chest, alongside the many other crews who have passed through. It’s a small tradition among cruisers but a fun way to leave a little piece of Fika behind.

Leaving our mark!

After one last Grill & Chill, we moved outside of the bay, ready for the next leg of our journey. The Exumas are calling!

We had such a good stay at Great Harbour Marina!
