Norfolk Libraries: Aboard the USS Wisconsin & Visiting the Slover Library

This post is part of a series highlighting libraries we discover along America's Great Loop. Read about more libraries we've found along our journey by visiting the Captain's Logs tagged "Libraries on the Loop."

As we embark on our Great Loop Adventure, we seek beautiful landscapes and new horizons and cherish the opportunities to immerse ourselves in local communities and their cultural offerings. As we introduced earlier, public libraries have a special place in our hearts, and we seek them out whenever we can.

During our stay in Norfolk, Virginia, we were delighted to discover our first two libraries during our Great Loop journey.

The USS Wisconsin Library

Step back in time and delve into history as you enter the USS Wisconsin, an awe-inspiring museum battleship. Amidst the historical artifacts and grandeur of naval warfare, we discovered a hidden treasure—the ship's library. This humble space, although compact, held a profound significance for the men who served aboard the vessel.

Did you learn about card catalogues in your library as a child? The USS Wisconsin has a cabinet for its card catalog which would have contained index cards with bibliographic information, helping patrons to look up books for their needs and interests. Now we search for books using a computer database.

It served as a retreat, a source of knowledge, and solace amid turbulent times. Looking into the rows of books, we could imagine the stories and memories forged within these pages during the ship's active service.

A Haven for Creativity: The Slover Library

A short walk from Waterside Marine in Norfolk, we stumbled upon the Slover Library, a vibrant hub of knowledge and creativity. This modern marvel offers far more than a traditional library experience. Its innovative design and extensive resources beckon visitors to explore and engage. From the moment we stepped inside, we were captivated by the myriad of opportunities it presented.

The vision for this spectacular destination that opened in January 2015 is to blend traditional library functions with the best of contemporary library resources and services. The innovative space design creates a vital and dynamic center of community learning, leading-edge technology and civic engagement, available to all citizens of the region, and is known as an attraction for residents and visitors alike.
— The Slover Library Vision

The Slover Library boasts an extensive collection of books for readers of all ages and interests. From classic literature to contemporary works, the shelves hold a literary feast waiting to be savored. Gwynnie and I (Alison) explored every floor, enjoying the architecture and the many resources available.

Beyond books, the Slover Library creates spaces that ignite creativity and foster learning. The creative studies and maker studios captured our imagination. Within the library was a Design Studio, Sound Studio, and Production Studio. These resources allow library card holders to reserve use of the space, hardware, and software. Opportunities like this allow folks to learn new skills or try out ideas before investing in personal equipment.

The Teen Floor not only had a collection of graphic novels (some of the kids favorite types of books), but also a game room filled with board games and some video game consoles.

In the Maker Studio, located in the Selden Market that the library is attached to, we were able to see a variety of equipment for creating with fabrics and 3D printing. There were stations available for sewing fabrics, designing prototypes, and experimenting with new technologies. The library's commitment to providing accessible resources for the community was evident in these engaging spaces.

Anne D. was working in the studios during our visit. She explained the tools available and how it was used by local residents. As we explained to her that we lived on our boat and were traveling along the Great Loop, she extended a warm invitation to us, acknowledging our transient lifestyle and offering access to the studios even without traditional library membership. If we were to stay in Norfolk for a week (maybe next year when we cross our wake!), she'd be happy to work with us to reserve the use of equipment.

This gesture exemplified their dedication to supporting individuals in their pursuit of knowledge and creativity, irrespective of their temporary presence in Norfolk.

Beyond the studios and books, the library also offered free supplies for personal care. We also spotted a seed library!

Both the USS Wisconsin and Slover Library reminded us of the power of libraries to connect individuals and communities. These spaces, each with its unique charm, brought people together, fostering dialogue, learning, and a sense of belonging. We were touched by the warmth of the library staff (thanks, Anne!), who shared their knowledge and made us feel welcome in their creative realms.

Our exploration of Norfolk's libraries left a memorable impression on our Great Loop Adventure. The USS Wisconsin's library encapsulated the resilience and camaraderie of those who served on the historic battleship. At the same time, the Slover Library embodied the spirit of innovation and community engagement.

While we visited we saw a celebration of local passtimes, with information about sailing and several small sailboats on display.

As we continue our journey, we carry the memories of these literary treasures with us, knowing that libraries serve as gateways to knowledge, connection, and discovery.

We invite you, dear Fika Crew, to embrace the libraries that await in your own travels. Explore the unique stories, experiences, and resources they offer. Let them transport you to new worlds, inspire your creativity, and connect you with the vibrant communities surrounding them.

Until we meet again, may your literary adventures be filled with wonder and enlightenment.
