America’s Great Loop

America’s Great Loop is a waterway route along the eastern United States. The course covers about 6,000 miles. This adventure will have us visiting about 15 states and 2 Canadian provinces.

Our family’s adventure will start in Norfolk, VA. From there, we’ll head north along the east coast, heading inland in New York. We’ll tour through canals from there until we enter the Great Lakes. During the summer, we’ll explore some coastal areas of Canada and visit familiar places along our home state, Michigan.

In the fall, we’ll take the mast off our sailboat in Chicago and ship it to Mobile, AL. Fika will become a motor vessel for the inland river system as we work south to the Gulf.

Around November, we’ll exit into the Gulf of Mexico. Our winter will trade the lake-effect snow of our Michigan home for the warm weather that Florida and the Bahamas might provide.

When Spring weather arrives, we’ll begin to travel north again. The term “crossing our wake” means that we’ll complete The Great Loop. This will happen once we re-enter or pass Norfolk, VA.

Once our loop is complete, we may spend the summer traveling further north, exploring Maine and Nova Scotia.

Who knows where the winds may blow us after that?
